Philosophy:

b.a.y.fund believes education is a powerful tool that helps young people overcome adversity, develop character and build community. We are committed to helping young people finish high school and become the first in their family to graduate from college.

We make a 10 year commitment to each student - from the end of 7th grade to the end of 5 years of college. Through mentoring, tutoring, community service and college counseling our students are exposed to experiences and challenges that encourage them to develop the decision-making skills, leadership ability and good judgment necessary to become successful adults.

History:

b.a.y. fund was founded in November 2000 by Ann-Eve Hazen, Anaflor Smith and a number of their friends and colleagues who were inspired by The Fulfillment Fund, a 25 year-old award-winning youth development nonprofit whose high school graduation and college matriculation rates exceed those of the Los Angeles Unified School District by 23% and 37% respectively.

Our first class of 24 students was chosen in June 2002 and matched with 24 mentors in July 2002. Our second class of 25 students joined b.a.y. fund in May 2003.

The Santa Clara County Psychological Association honored b.a.y. fund in March 2003 with the association's award for Significant Contributions to the Development of Children.

In September 2003, the Nonprofits' Insurance Alliance of California selected b.a.y. fund as the featured nonprofit for the cover of the 2004 NIAC calendar.
